It is accepted that language users are able both to use language creatively and to process multi-word fixed expresions such as collocations. In this talk I illustrate how monolingual and bilingual text analysis reveals the extensive nature of collocations or chunks in natural language data. The high frequency of chunks, which are often semi-fixed or semi-productive, poses problems for traditional view of language and I will sketch an alternative usage-based approach to language description. I will also briefly consider some consequences of corpus analysis for the teaching of languages.

（ 言語の使用においては斬新な表現とともに定型表現も使用される。 この講演では、具体例をあげながら、英語および英語と日本語のコーパス分析 を通して、定型表現であるコロケーションやチャンクの持つ性質を広く分析す る。 頻度の高いチャンクは定型的な性質と非定型的な性質の両方を持ち合わせてお り、従来の言語学では分析が困難である。 そこで、言語使用に基づいた言語の記述方法という新しいアプローチが必要に なる。本講演では、この新しいアプローチの概略を説明する。 また、コーパス分析が言語教育にもたらす影響についても言及する予定であ る。）
